What This Rule Detects
Detects when LinkedIn's click ID (li_fat_id) appears WITHOUT manual UTM parameters. Unlike Google Ads, GA4 cannot read li_fat_id - without UTM parameters, your paid LinkedIn traffic will appear as "linkedin.com / referral" instead of paid social campaigns.

Try Free AuditWhy It Matters
Critical Attribution Loss:
- Paid ads show as referral traffic - GA4 cannot read li_fat_id without UTM help
- No campaign tracking - Cannot identify which LinkedIn campaigns drive results
- Impossible ROI calculation - Cannot attribute conversions to specific ad spend
- Budget waste - Spending on "referral" traffic that's actually paid ads
Technical Reality:
- GA4 does NOT have native LinkedIn Ads support (unlike Google Ads gclid)
- li_fat_id is for LinkedIn's internal tracking - GA4 cannot read it
- Without UTM parameters, GA4 only sees the referrer: linkedin.com
- Result: Traffic categorized as "linkedin.com / referral" (organic-looking traffic)
Real Example:
- LinkedIn Ads budget: $5,000/month
- GA4 shows: "linkedin.com / referral" with 1,000 sessions
- Campaign breakdown: Not available (no utm_campaign)
- Cost per session: Cannot calculate (no connection to ad spend)
- Reality: This is ALL paid traffic, but GA4 has no way to know that
Common Scenarios
Scenario 1: Default LinkedIn Ads (No UTMs)
LinkedIn automatically adds li_fat_id, but doesn't add UTMs unless you configure them:
Scenario 2: LinkedIn Sponsored Content Without UTMs
Sponsored content includes li_fat_id but needs UTMs for proper attribution:
Scenario 3: LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms
Lead Gen Forms with li_fat_id but missing UTMs:

How to Fix
Required: Add UTM Parameters to All LinkedIn Ads
LinkedIn ads REQUIRE UTM parameters for GA4 tracking. The li_fat_id alone is not enough.
Step 1: Configure URL Parameters in LinkedIn Campaign Manager
- Open LinkedIn Campaign Manager
- Go to your campaign/campaign group/ad
- Find "Website URL" or "URL parameters" section
- Add UTM parameters (see templates below)
Step 2: Use These UTM Templates
For LinkedIn Sponsored Content:
utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid-social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{creative.name}}
For LinkedIn Text Ads:
utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}
For LinkedIn Dynamic Ads:
utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=display&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{creative.id}}
For LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms:
utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content=lead-gen
Step 3: Apply to All Active Campaigns
- Update existing campaigns with URL parameters
- Set as default for new campaigns
- Test with LinkedIn Preview feature before publishing
Step 4: Verify in GA4
- GA4 → Reports → Traffic acquisition
- Look for "linkedin / cpc" or "linkedin / paid-social"
- Click into source to see campaign breakdown
- Verify campaign names match your LinkedIn campaigns
Benefits:
- ✅ Proper attribution - paid traffic classified correctly
- ✅ Campaign tracking - see which campaigns drive results
- ✅ ROI calculation - connect ad spend to conversions
- ✅ Works with li_fat_id - they complement each other
Verification Steps
Test Your Configuration:
- Click one of your LinkedIn Ads
- Check the URL in browser - should contain both
li_fat_id=ANDutm_parameters - Open GA4 Real-Time reports
- Verify session appears as "linkedin / cpc" (not "linkedin.com / referral")
- Check that campaign name is captured
Examples
❌ Incorrect (Missing UTMs)
https://example.com?li_fat_id=jkl012
Result: Shows as "linkedin.com / referral" in GA4
Impact: Cannot distinguish paid from organic, no campaign tracking
https://shop.com/demo?li_fat_id=xyz789
Result: Traffic appears as referral, no attribution to ad spend
Impact: Cannot calculate ROI, budget decisions impossible
✅ Correct (li_fat_id + UTMs)
https://example.com?li_fat_id=jkl012&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=b2b-leads
Result: Shows as "linkedin / cpc" with campaign="b2b-leads"
Tracking: Proper attribution, campaign tracking, ROI calculation possible
https://shop.com/demo?li_fat_id=xyz789&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid-social&utm_campaign=lead-gen
Result: Shows as "linkedin / paid-social" with full campaign details
Tracking: Complete attribution chain from ad to conversion
Platform Click ID Validation
UTMGuard also checks that your utm_source matches the platform:
❌ Mismatch Error
https://example.com?li_fat_id=jkl012&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc
Error: utm_source should be "linkedin", not "facebook"
Impact: Confusing attribution data
✅ Correct Match
https://example.com?li_fat_id=jkl012&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=cpc
Result: Single accurate session attributed to LinkedIn Ads
Tracking: SUCCESS
https://shop.com/demo?li_fat_id=xyz789&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid-social
Result: Clean LinkedIn attribution, no confusion
Tracking: SUCCESS
GA4 Impact Analysis
Without UTM Parameters:
- LinkedIn Ads traffic misclassified as "linkedin.com / referral"

With Proper UTM Parameters:
- Traffic correctly attributed to "linkedin / cpc" or "linkedin / paid-social"
- Campaign-level tracking and analysis available
- Cost per session and conversion metrics accurate
- Budget allocation based on real performance data

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I disable li_fat_id on LinkedIn Ads?
A: No. LinkedIn always adds li_fat_id to ad clicks. You cannot disable it. The only solution is adding manual UTM parameters.
Q: Does this affect organic LinkedIn posts?
A: No. This only affects LinkedIn Ads (paid campaigns). Organic post clicks don't include li_fat_id parameter.
Q: Will this affect LinkedIn Insight Tag tracking?
A: No. LinkedIn Insight Tag tracks on-site behavior independently. Adding manual UTMs only affects GA4 tracking accuracy.
Q: Can I still track campaigns without UTMs?
A: Not in GA4. Unlike Google Ads, GA4 cannot read LinkedIn's li_fat_id parameter. You must add UTM parameters manually.
Q: What if I need campaign names in GA4?
A: You MUST add manual UTM parameters. GA4 has no native LinkedIn Ads integration and cannot extract campaign data from li_fat_id.
Q: How do I track LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms?
A: Add UTM parameters to the "Thank you page URL" in your Lead Gen Form settings. When users complete the form and visit your site, GA4 will track it correctly.
